What’s not to love about leather? It looks amazing, feels fabulous and smells divine. Yes, it costs more than other alternative materials, but with a bit of love and care, it will last a lifetime. It is not hard to see why it’s such a popular choice when it comes to furniture. So once you have purchased your leather lounge, how do you go about protecting your investment and keeping it in tip top condition?
Regular cleaning
As leather is a natural product, it needs to be kept clean to stay in pristine condition. One of the most common mistakes people make with leather, is attempting to clean it with normal household products. It is a costly mistake, so always use products specifically made for leather, most come in the form of a spray. Spray first and then gently create a lather using your fingertips or a soft brush to remove any stubborn dirt or food spills. For best results, clean every 3 months.
Conditioning care
After cleaning, the leather will need to basically be moisturised. Like our own skin, if not cared for properly, it can crack and dry out. Using a leather conditioner will ensure your gorgeous couch, or other leather products, will stay as soft and comfortable as the day you first got them.
Vacuum
Gently vacuuming any sand or food crumbs from between the cushions is recommended. Although it might not seem like a big problem, if left to build up, sand and crumbs can be very abrasive. Dirt will rub away at stitching and the surface of the leather causing major damage.
Give it a beating
Sounds strange but as the leather softens over time, the filling inside can shift and move around. Every few months plump them up and give them a shake, this will allow the filling to be distributed more evenly through the cushions.
Avoid sunlight
If you can, try and position any leather furniture or products, away from direct sunlight. A bit is ok, but long hours of full sun is going to cause damage. Living in Australia, this is even more of an issue. UV can cause colour fade, and also break down the top sealer coat causing the leather to dry out. If your furniture can only be positioned near a window, get some good window coverings and try to keep the sun out as much as possible.
Avoid extreme heat
Snuggling on your leather sofa next to an open fire or heater is very appealing during the colder months. Although you may love the warmth, your sofa will not. Very high temperatures can literally shrink leather, there is no fixing that so it is better to be safe than sorry.
So now that you know what steps you will need to take to keep you leather pristine, it is time to enjoy your purchase.
